Ubuntu 18.04 image: apt update error due to wrong datetime

I am using the Ubuntu:18.04 image.
When I try to run apt update I get error messages like these:

E: Release file for http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/bionic-security/InRelease is not valid yet (invalid for another 6d 5h 6min 19s). Updates for this repository will not be applied.

When I use date to check the datetime I see that it is indeed 6 days behind the actual date. However, changing the timezone does not result in the datetime being changed.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?
