Hello to all,
First of all I would like to say that I am a beginner with Docker, Airflow and Spark. I have read a lot of documentation but I still can’t find any help to solve my problem. I apologize in advance if what I think I know is not correct and I thank you in advance for your help and corrections. Here is my problem:
I would like to run a data pipeline with Airflow in which a Spark job (with pyspark) will be run to retrieve a large amount of data from GCP and then process it.
My deployment will be done locally.
According to the different documentations I read, it seems that to launch Airflow you have to install it on a kubernetes cluster.
In my case I use the Kubernetes cluster present in Docker Desktop.
The used image of Airflow is apache/airflow:2.5.0.
And the docker-compose is the following :
version: '3'
x-airflow-common:
&airflow-common
# In order to add custom dependencies or upgrade provider packages you can use your extended image.
# Comment the image line, place your Dockerfile in the directory where you placed the docker-compose.yaml
# and uncomment the "build" line below, Then run `docker-compose build` to build the images.
image: ${AIRFLOW_IMAGE_NAME:-apache/airflow:2.5.0}
# build: .

To make my deployment easier, I think it is possible to add Pyspark in the container.
One has to create a Dockerfile, build the image, then use it in the docker-compose.
So I made the following Dockerfile:
FROM apache/airflow:2.5.0
FROM ubuntu:latest
LABEL maintainer="masroorh"
# Install OpenJDK 8
RUN \
apt-get update && \
apt-get install -y openjdk-8-jdk && \
rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*
# Install Python
RUN \
apt-get update && \
apt-get install -y python python-dev python-pip python-virtualenv && \
rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*
# Install PySpark and Numpy
RUN \
pip install --upgrade pip && \
pip install numpy && \
pip install pyspark
# Define working directory
WORKDIR /data
# Define default command
CMD ["bash"]
et here my docker-compose that use the resulting image of this Dockerfile :
version: '3'
x-airflow-common:
&airflow-common
# In order to add custom dependencies or upgrade provider packages you can use your extended image.
# Comment the image line, place your Dockerfile in the directory where you placed the docker-compose.yaml

I also added this in the docker-compose, to allow the connection between airflow and spark :
_PIP_ADDITIONAL_REQUIREMENTS:-apache-airflow-providers-apache-spark apache-airflow-providers-cncf-kubernetes
Here are my questions:
-
I saw that there are several Dockerfile available on the internet. How to know which one to choose? For example in my Dockerfile I have the impression that there are steps not useful (example CMD [“bash”]), or that it could be missing.
-
If I don’t say anything stupid, Airflow is a service just like Spark. And both have to be started. Indeed just creating a container is not enough to run them (a bit like when you do a docker run -it …).
In our case I imagine that the docker-compose takes care of it for Airflow when we launch the commands :
docker-compose up airflow-init
docker-compose up
In this case you would also have to start Spark. So you would have to add some parameters in the docker-compose? If yes, which ones?
- Is installing Spark enough to do pyspark or do we need to install python spark specifically?
Thanks in advance for your help.
