Unable to connect to docker daemon after apt-get upgrade on ubuntu based server

I had docker version “Docker version 17.12.1-ce, build 7390fc6” running on ubuntu 14.04 machine.

I did sudo apt-upgrade and now i am unable to run docker commands. I get “Cannot connect to the Docker daemon at unix:///var/run/docker.sock. Is the docker daemon running?” error message.

Below are results of some of the commands i tried after upgrade:

1. docker -v
Docker version 17.12.1-ce, build 7390fc6
2. sudo docker service status
docker stop/waiting
3. sudo usermod -aG docker $USER
cannot connect to /var/run/nscd/socket
cannot connect to /var/run/nscd/socket
4. sudo dockered

I tried uninstalling docker and installing back again, but no help.

Uninstallation commands:

  1. sudo apt-get purge docker-ce
  2. sudo rm -rf /var/lib/docker

Installation commands:

  1. sudo apt-get update
  2. sudo apt-get install apt-transport-https ca-certificates curl software-properties-common
  3. curl -fsSL https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu/gpg | sudo apt-key add -
  4. sudo add-apt-repository
    “deb [arch=amd64] https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu
    $(lsb_release -cs)
    stable”
  5. sudo apt-get update
  6. sudo apt-get install docker-ce
  7. sudo usermod -aG docker $USER

Any help will be appreciated.
