Traceroute in Linux containers

There is a long outstanding bug in vpnkit, part of Docker Desktop for Windows, whereby traceroute in Linux containers does not work (see: Any progress to get traceroute working on Windows (Docker with Linux images) · Issue #586 · moby/vpnkit · GitHub and TTL not preserved · Issue #194 · moby/vpnkit · GitHub).

It looks as if there is no active maintenance going on of vpnkit, this issue is from 2017 and no progress.

Is there any news from Docker developers themselves about this annoying issue? This causes RIPE Atlas and Globalping probes on Docker Desktop for Windows to fail on traceroute and mtr measurements.

Any input?

TIA, Ernst

You could try to report it here:

What they use or want to use in Docker Desktop in the future is another question. vpnkit might not be fixed if they want to replace it or as I saw somewhere already did. It seems since then Docker Desktop changed even more. I found a traceroute related issue in the for-win repository, but I believe that is a different issue, so you could open a new one and if you do, please, share the issue link here so I can watch it.

Now using Windows VMware Workstation with a Linux VM running Docker and all is well. The Globalping probe can now execute traceroute commands.

Rather silly that Docker Desktop for Windows uses vpnkit which has not been updated for 3.5 years.
