Update from 4.72 to the current 4.73.1 fails with permission issues in Windows 11

Update attempts raise permission issue which is a new experience for me with updates.

“fork/exec C:\Users\PIUSON~1\AppData\Local\Temp\DockerDesktopUpdates\Docker Desktop Installer (226574).exe: The requested operation requires elevation.”

This seems to be new as my previous updates did not indicate the need for elevation.

I even restarted my Docker Desktop as Administrator before running the update but I still ended up with permission issue.

Is this a known issue with update from 4.72 to 4.73.1?

Yes, it is known. We had other topics about it. I can share my personal experience. I just downloaded the new installer, which already had the fix, so it could correctly handle elevated permissions. All my images and docker data was kept. So downloading the new installer and running it is an option too, if the update feature doesn’t work.

Just for future readers: I cannot tell for sure if data would be kept in future versions when doing what I did, but this time I was prepared for losing data and everything was kept.
