I have a PyCharm project that I want to ship to another computer without using a registry (we do not have one yet). I build an image and started a container, which worked fine.
I saved it in a .tar file and copied it to the other computer, where I loaded the image with the docker load command.
The image is listed by the docker images command but when the docker run command results in the error “Unable to find image locally”.
One thing I notice is that the original image and the .tar file are about 14GB but the loaded image at the other computer is twice as big (28 GB).
The screenshot shows the images tab of the Docker Desktop and the terminal with the commands.
OS on both computers is Linux Mint.
Since docker run
is the only command you prefix with sudo
, it appears that you have a docker double installation.
Can you share the output of these commands:
docker info
sudo docker info
Here you are:

P.S. I also created a very basic FastAPI project and ran the same steps. It also doubled the image size from 1.1 to 2.2 GB but this time, I was able to run a container.
It is like i though, both outputs are not from the same Docker backend:
- first output: Docker Desktop
- second output: docker on Linux Mint 22.1
Thank you!
It is a clean installation of Linux and Docker. The project includes a machine learning model that is supposed to run on GPU. So I probably managed to mess it up by installing Nvidia Container Toolkit to enable GPU support (although I was able to pull it off on the first computer).
I guess I should reinstall Docker, right?
You just need to decide which Docker version you want to use, and uninstall the other one.
According, GPU support | Docker Docs Docker Desktop does not support GPUs anywhere else than on Docker Desktop for Windows.
So you probably want to get rid of Docker Desktop, and keep docker-ce. I never used the Nvidia Container Toolkit, thus there is not much I can say about it.
I am going to move this topic to the Docker Desktop category and add the Linux tag.
Yes, it makes sense. Thank you for your help!
