beta6 kernel panic on start

Expected behavior

In beta5 when I started the Docker(beta) application the menu bar icon would appear and then shortly after I would be able to run kitematic or the docker cli successfully

Actual behavior

In beta6 when I launch the Docker(beta) application the menu bar icon appears and is interactive for a couple of minutes but the docker service does not respond. After a few minutes and a few dozen “service not responding” messages in the log files my monitor/mouse/keyboard freeze followed by a black screen of death and a reboot.

Information

I’ve uninstalled the Beta app in order to get enough uptime to file this report. running pinata does not seem to work in an uninstalled state:

$ ./pinata.bin diagnose -u
/bin/sh: /Users/dcheney/Library/Group Containers/group.com.docker/bin//docker-diagnose: No such file or directory

$ ./docker-diagnose
OS X: version 10.11.4 (build: 15E65)
Docker.app: version v1.10.3-beta5
Running diagnostic tests:
[ERROR] docker-cli cannot find docker

OSX 11.11.4

Steps to reproduce the behavior

  1. Install beta5 package
  2. accept upgrade to beta6
  3. after reboot launch beta6 application
  4. wait 3 to 5 minutes

Could you please check the Console.app and /Library/Logs/CrashReporter for any kernel panic logs and send them along? We’ve had reports of at least 1 other kernel panic and are in contact with Apple regarding various kernel issues we encounter.

Also, if you feel up to it, you could run sudo nvram boot-args="keepsyms=1" in and then re-trigger the panic so that the backtrace is already symbolicated and we can more easily collate the various kernel panic reports we get.

I’m sorry you’ve had such a poor experience with Docker for Mac Beta so far and I hope we can work together to see that this issue is resolved.

Thank you so much for your patience and participation in the Docker for Mac Beta.

Best regards,

David Sheets

Thanks for the reply. I’m happy to hear that I’m not the only one :slight_smile:

CrashReporter does not seem to have any records from these panics. I’m attaching the last state dump I saw, though I’m not sure how helpful it could be. I will attempt to reproduce tonight after work.

After re-installing I have not yet been able to reproduce the kernel panic, though I have been able to run pinata diagnose. I do not know if it captured anything valuable and apparently I do not have permission to upload the result here.

If you run pinata diagnose -u, it should automatically upload to bugsnag/S3.

I did in fact do that
