I was searching for the history behind the choice of a whale on the logo but could not find more than that the whale’s name was voted to be Mobi Dock in September, 2013. Can someone share the story behind the choice of a whale?

Basically, in the early days of Docker (the project) there was a contest on 99Designs hosted by Dotcloud (the company Docker used to be) with many ideas and submissions (other proposed mascots included a crane, a giraffe, and an acorn!). The whale logo was overwhelmingly popular compared to the others and quickly became voted as the winner of the contest.
